It’s been a crazy week in the world of Pokémon GO! One of the most interesting new updates for veteran players is the addition of Candy XL, which can be used to power up Pokémon past level 40. Introduced in the GO Beyond update, Candy XL can be obtained from a variety of in-game tasks, including catching, hatching, and transferring Pokémon. Today, we are going to take a first look at some of the initial data Silph Researchers have collected on Candy XL rewards for catching Pokémon.
Researchers have diligently recorded over 1,400 catches since the Candy XL feature was released globally. These catches have revealed a striking relationship between the level of the Pokémon and the amount of Candy XL you receive.
The figure above shows the average number of candies received per catch as a function of the level of the captured Pokémon. As you can see from the graph, there is only a small chance of receiving Candy XL from low-level catches. Starting near level 15, the rate of Candy XL increases nearly linearly with the level of the caught Pokémon. Using a linear regression model, we find that the rate of Candy XL received is roughly an additional 0.037 per level above level 14. Catch level and Candy XL rates are strongly correlated and significant for Pokémon level 15 and up (p-value = 2.57 x 10-7). Higher-level Pokémon were more likely to yield a Candy XL bundle, and bundles from higher-level Pokémon were also more likely to contain a larger amount of Candy XL. More data will be needed to uncover the exact mathematical model used to determine Candy XL bundles.
We are also evaluating if Pokémon obtained from Field Research and Raid Battles (among other encounter methods) have different Candy XL drop rates compared to their wild counterparts of the same level. We do not have enough data at this time, however, to make any meaningful comparisons just yet. The above figure includes data for all encounter types.
As the race up to the new level cap continues, Silph Researchers will be hard at work uncovering the mysteries of Candy XL. In the meantime, if you’re looking for Candy XL, make sure you catch those strong, higher-level Pokémon, travelers! Until next time, see you on the Road!
